This is pretty California specific, although thanks to reality tv shows and characters based on reality tv stereotypes, I feel it’s spreading beyond our borders, but “like”. Depending on how articulate you are, it can be used artfully or excessively. I’ve heard some people use it every other word, simply because they have trouble pinning down the actual word they’re looking for. I always thought that it was a way for us to vocalize the comma. If you take a typical San Diego sentence of, “So like we were thinking of going to Oscars for fish tacos but then like Steven said like he thought Lolitas was better.” The word “like” is placed in all the spots that a comma would go to break up the clauses in the sentence! Whether it’s thought of like that or not, I think it’s a subconscious action. Open to others thoughts though!
